EEC Journal

November EEC(11.11.10)NEW!!

This has been an eventful time in the EEC. At the end of October the ESS club had a movie night. The movie was Halloween-themed, called 'Beetlejuice.' Everyone had a great time. More students then ever have been using the EEC for checking out books and DVDs. Also, students have been using the computers for Oral Communication listening assignments and also for taking moodlereader quizzes for their reading books. Tuesday through Friday at lunchtime students give short presentations from 12:50-13:00. The most recent presentation was introducing two vocabulary words ('hero' and 'villain'), and the presenters used an Anpanman themed skit to introduce the words. We look forward to more great daily presentations and hopefully a great movie in December!

April/May EEC Activities(11.5.30)

The new school year is well underway, and the EEC is active!

At lunchtime we are having first year students lead short discussions on contemporary topics.

Our two returning faculty, Rod Van Huis and Frank Bailey, are adding their expertise to the environment on a daily basis, which helps encourage students with their motivation. It is very helpful for the students to have these willing faculty members available for any students to chat with.

Students from Northwestern College in America were here for two weeks, so students had many chances to use their English and make friends while they were here.

To finish May, the ESS club had their movie night on May 27, watching 'Hairspray' with the students from America.
We're looking forward to more fun things in the EEC in the next few months!

December(10.12.16)

In December, the Showtime lunchtime presentations have continued. First year students in groups of ten have led Bingo games, Geography quiz games, short skits about love and relationships, and also sang songs. There are 10 new DVD movies and 40 new books this month, as well as new spinning book racks. When students were asked "Why do you come to the EEC?" or "What do you like about the EEC?," some answers were: "I wanna enjoy talking in English," "I come to hear native teachers English pronunciation," "I can relax here," "There are many movies and foreign music, but also we can talk to native English speakers," and "Because I can see a lot of movies and borrow books."

September(10.9.22)

The EEC is alive and well! June was a budsy month of book lending, with over 200 books lent to students during the month. We also lent out over 40 DVDs, and had a few movie nights.
October will start a new semester wtih many exciting changes. Once a week at lunchtime will be the Showtime! presentation by groups of students with a foreign teacher. We also have 70 new books on order, and about 20 new DVDs since the end of last semester.

January (10.1.7)

The last push for the end of the semester has started. The latest teacher-chosen CD of songs for January is completed. Last month's Christmas party was a huge success. We ate our fill of cakes and snacks, and exchanged gifts while playing Bingo and listening to nice music. We'll keep updates coming regarding a movie night for this month.

December (09.12.15)

December has been another good month for the EEC. Movie night was a huge success. We watched 'The Nightmare Before Christmas,' and had a large number in the audience. The pizza and popcorn were eaten quickly! We also received about 50 new graded reader books, and have another 50 that should be in within a few days. Thursday, December 17 is the ESS Christmas party, and any Baiko student may attend. It starts at 5pm, and we'll have games, food, and a present exchange. In January we hope to have some new lunchtime presentatinos, perhaps by students that have returned from studying abroad in America.

October and November(09.11.07)

The EEC is going strong. In October, we received another batch of graded reader books--more than 100 new titles! We also increased the DVD library, which now has more than 200 titles total, and 6 seasons of Friends--both books and DVDs are available for students to borrow.
Our good friend Bryan Hirayama has returned to America for work and further study, and replacing him is David Farrar. While no one can truly replace Bryan, the students appear to be in good hands with David.
Halloween has come and gone, as has the Halloween party--complete with a Bingo game!
We also had a presentation from Oxford University Press in Japan. Students and teachers (Japanese and foreign) were treated to pizza and the latest textbook information.
We have two new faculty-choice CDs available for borrowing also, with 10 new songs each on the October and November CDs. Our faculty is diverse, as are the musical selections! Come inside the EEC and join the fun!

Student thoughts about EEC(09.08.18)

1.
I go to EEC everyday. Because American teachers are in EEC room, all students can talk with them, and I also do that!! EEC has many things to learn English: English books, movies, newspapers, PC and music!!! EEC almost always helps my studying English!! That is why I like EEC!!!
Hitomi Ogawa (3rd year English major)

2.
Whenever I go to EEC, I check out the latest magazines, newspapers, music, books, and all kinds of published stuff (English stuff, of course). They are updated in a while, so it's easy to catch up with what is going on in the world in English. EEC is open for everyone who wants to learn English, study for class, talk with American teachers, practice presentations, or just drop by. Feel free to visit, and there is an English-only room in Baiko. I go to EEC almost everyday and stay there a while to keep up with my English. I study for class in EEC, do research, and help my friends who are interested in studying America/Australia program. I like that perfect room for studying English with relaxing and friendly atmosphere. I totally recommend visiting EEC!!!!!!!!
Mami Ishida (4th year English major)

3.
After ten months of exchange program, I wanted not to lose my sense of English: the all four skills---speaking, listening, reading, and writing for sure. I love reading National Geography and People monthly, but they are costly to subscribe by myself. At EEC, I read the sort of magazines a lot usually to strengthen my reading skill. At the same time, I discuss some of the articles from the magazines with foreign teachers in English so that I can improve my speaking skill and my critical thinking skill, as well. What the greatest thing of EEC, is like, I can communicate with underclassmen. Senior students can hardly see or talk with freshmen or sophomore students. I love chatting with them at the room and sometimes I advise them how they can prepare for the exchange program or whatever. It is so much fun having time in the "Americanized" room or I would say, the 51st state of the United States in Baiko
Haruka Noyori (4th year English Literature major)

4.
I can borrow DVDs, books and music CDs easily from EEC to help my English skills. When I have a question, at least one native English teacher is there, so I can ask them anytime. During lunch time, native English teachers and students have lunch together, so I am able to chat with them. It's good to meet students from different years.
Mari Sasaki (2nd year English major)

June EEC(09.07.15)

June was another good month for the EEC. Especially, our lunchtime student-led lessons are becoming better and better. Students are coming the week in advance of their presentation in order to learn the best way to do it.
Our movie was The Princess Bride, and was a huge success. This month's Popcorn Movie Night will have pizza as well, and is this Friday, the 17th, starting at 5:30. We don't have a movie chosen for certain, but probably it will be Phenomenon, with John Travolta.
We did get in about 30 new graded readers this month into the EEC, as well as fancy new display stands and the usual People and Entertainment Weekly magazines.
Come on in, the EEC is always open and COOL.

end of May(09.06.8)

May was a great month for Baiko's English Education Center. The ESS club held a movie night, and about 15 students showed up and watched "Mean Girls" while eating popcorn. We also received about 20 new graded readers for the students to read in their classes.
Our DVD collection has expanded to over 100 DVDs donated by the foreign staff. Students have enjoyed borrowing both books and DVDs, and the most popular DVDs so far have been High School Musical 1 and 2. Every day we continue to play a DVD or music throughout the day. We have also subscribed to a daily English newspaper, as well as a weekly newsaper. We have received several issues of People and Entertainment Weekly magazines as well, and we are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the two promised computers for the students to use to enhance their English study.
June 18 will be the next movie night for the ESS club, and they have chosen to watch "The Princess Bride."

The opening ceremonies for EEC(09.04.30)

The opening ceremonies for Baiko University's English Education Center (EEC) were held on April 21st, 2009. About 25 students and teachers were in attendance to be introduced to the new facility. In fact, the EEC has been active for three weeks already, with a daily video program, a staff-made CD with lyrics, as well as magazines, newspapers and hundreds of graded readers for the students to use freely.

Frank Bailey and Stefanie Tacata had a demonstration lesson of what pairs of students will be doing daily during the lunchtime period: teaching everyone in attendance one vocabulary word and one phrasal verb or idiom. As the daily lesson only takes about ten minutes, there was plenty of time leftover for eating snacks and lunches and chatting. The Baiko ESS club was meeting later to decide upon a date for the monthly
popcorn movie night as well as to choose which movie to watch.
